I always love the idea of being a grown-up and re-experiencing foods from childhood as an adult. The experience gets even better when you to add alcohol to the mix.
Last week Laura and I were excited to find this recipe for an alcoholic Orange Julius. Straight from the mall food court, sipping one of these reminds me of hot summers when we would go to the arcades to waste away the afternoon.
If you wish to be transported back, add 2 oz. triple sec (the new Pierre Ferrand Dry Curaçao Ancienne Méthod is recommended), 1/2 oz. light rum, 1/2 oz. of lemon juice, 1/2 tsp. vanilla syrup, 1/2 tsp. sugar cane syrup, and 1 dash of orange bitters to a cocktail shaker. Add a 1/2 oz. heavy cream last.
Shake hard with ice and strain into a rocks glass over crushed ice. Garnish with freshly-grated nutmeg, if desired.
On the weekends, drinking one of these might be just the thing for getting around the mall that is Manhattan.
