Just a few months ago, if you had asked us where we saw ourselves in two years (or even three), we likely would have answered something like this: still living in the West Village and very likely still living in the same apartment (with Iggy Pop still serving as the faithful companion, of course).
It’s funny how sometimes fate has other plans.
When faced with our lease renewal earlier this month, we began “browsing” (if by browsing you mean obsessively searching) StreetEasy and Craigslist. You know, just to get a feel for the market and to give us negotiating leverage with our current management company—or so we told ourselves.
Then one morning I saw it: a huge one-bedroom with a living room, a dining room, an eat-in kitchen, huge windows, light, original picture moldings and details. I sent it to Ryan with a disclaimer, “Hey, wow, this one would be really cool if we were going to move!”
Alas, he loved it and we set up a showing just for kicks. The first hitch came quickly though—the current tenants are “difficult,” according to the broker, and were limiting access for showings. We could only see it at 9:30 p.m. at night. So, we trekked over at 9 p.m. to look at the apartment which is currently occupied by three—count ’em—roommates. (I think it will be big enough for two of us sharing a bedroom, huh?)
About a week later, we officially signed the lease and we are proud to say that on August 1, Smith & Ratliff will be relocating to the East Village (or the Lower East Side, depending upon who you talk to).
We’re excited for the adventure and have spent our remaining West Village days gorging ourselves on John’s Pizza and Magnolia Bakery banana pudding, but we have no doubt that we’ll be back.
