A Home for Harmony

Harmony, an 8-year-old cat for adoption in New York

This week, we became the proud foster parents to Harmony, a sweet 8-year-old kitty whose elderly “mom”, Bernadette, sadly passed away last week. Harmony would have been taken to a shelter, where she likely would have been euthanized, were it not for the quick action of Bernadette’s neighbor, who happened to know just how special Harmony was to Bernadette.

Now, after the incredible networking of several amazing people, Harmony is safe and sound with us, but she’s still on the hunt for a permanent home. Ryan is mildly allergic to cats, so we can’t keep her forever, but he’s nice enough to tough out red, itchy eyes to give Harmony the love that she needs and deserves right now.

Since she came to us on Monday, this precious girl has come out of her shell so much! She’s very smart, talkative, and absolutely loves to be petted and brushed. You can tell she was a well-loved companion.

Iggy Pop on the Rug

Before coming to us, she had never been around another animal, so we were amazed when she didn’t even bat an eyelash at Iggy. As you can see above, Iggy is already bored with his new sister, since she doesn’t seem to understand his overly exuberant attempts to play. (He is, however, quite impressed with cat toys.)

If you know anyone in the NYC area who can offer Harmony an excellent forever home, let us know. She has a clean bill of health from the vet and would do great as a single low-maintenance kitty or with a small, friendly dog.

Mourning Company

A juvenile Mourning Dove on a New York City fire escape

This juvenile Mourning Dove has been keeping me company lately. Ryan and I have grown accustomed to hearing the comforting calls of her parents, who are typically perched on the neighboring fire escape, so we were happy to see one of their offspring show up outside our bedroom window one day.

I don’t know how much longer she will stick around, but I’ve enjoyed seeing her as I work at my desk, especially considering that she’s quite brave and doesn’t seem concerned at all when I open the window or point my long camera lens at her.

A New Addition

Eli, a blue and red half-moon male betta fish

Meet Eli, a blue and red half-moon betta named after none other than New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning. (That’s the only way Ryan agreed to get him.)

Eli was a PetSmart impulse buy, but he’s already brightened up our living room credenza and made me laugh as he swims around his bowl, hides in his anacharis plant, and chomps his food pellets loud enough to hear outside of the water. He is definitely not shy!

It’s been years since I last had a betta, so I had forgotten how much fun they are and how much personality they have. Sometimes it’s the little things, like a $4 betta, that can make your day.
