Not too long ago, Laura and I were walking home from dinner when we noticed some butcher paper up at what was previously a portion of Liza Sherman’s antique store on Bedford Street.

A few days later, we noticed that the space was being transformed into an old-school barber shop—the Neighborhood Cut & Shave—complete with classic chairs and lots of wood paneling.

Having just gotten a fresh cut, I didn’t get the chance to go in when the shop first opened, but after letting myself grow a bit too shaggy I decided to forgo my usual trip to F.S.C. Barber in the Village in favor of supporting my new neighbors.

The shop’s owner and master barber, Alex Nunez, immediately welcomed me in and even recognized me from his days at F.S.C.

The interior of the shop is styled similarly to F.S.C. and the other throwback barber shops around town, though the Cut & Shave has bit more of a gentlemanly feel about it—perhaps due in part to Alex and his staff’s attention to detail and attentiveness. They really make sure you get the cut you’re expecting.

Currently, the shop offers haircuts, beard trims, straight razor shaves and shampoos. Their website even allows customers to make a reservation in advance.

The staff is made up of ex-F.S.C. and Chelsea Barber cutters, so you’ll be in good hands the whole way. I had my hair cut by Thomas, who kept me in the loop about what was going on as he did it. He asked whether I wanted scissors or clippers and used scissors for the entire cut. He even offered styling tips for my new cut and applied some product.

A straight razor shave in the back and a hot eucalyptus towel later, and you’re out the door.
